This month, at Humble Grape Wine Bar & Restaurant, we’re raising our glasses to Argentina, putting the spotlight on Vinyes Ocults—an exceptional organic wine producer making waves in the natural wine world. From the heart of Mendoza, winemaker Tomás Stahringer is crafting wines that capture the spirit of Argentina’s high-altitude vineyards, and we’re thrilled to showcase them across our London wine bars and restaurants, some of the best bars in London.
The Story Behind Vinyes Ocults
It all started in the late 2000s when Tomás Stahringer, a passionate winemaker in Argentina, began producing small batches of wine from his family’s Uco Valley estate. What began as a garage project in his parents’ home, quickly gained traction, selling out their first vintage of just 550 bottles in two months. Now, Vinyes Ocults has grown into a boutique winery, producing Malbec, Viognier, and even Pinot Noir Pet Nat, all with a focus on sustainable and organic practices.
The name "Vinyes Ocults" means "hidden vineyard" in Catalan, inspired by the secluded location of the vineyard, nestled between plum, pear, and apple trees in an organic garden harvested by Tomás’s family. This mystical charm carries through to their winemaking philosophy—an approach rooted in harmony with nature.
What Makes Vinyes Ocults Special?
The extreme conditions of Mendoza's high desert—with its intense daytime sun and cool, crisp nights—allow for perfect ripeness in the grapes, leading to wines with rich concentration and natural freshness. The Malbec from Vinyes Ocults, in particular, shines with black fruit, minerality, and balanced acidity, making it a standout amongst other best red wines in the region.
