Businesses in Clapham Junction are calling for help from local residents, urging them to support local business in an effort to ensure no livelihoods are unnecessarily lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

‘We need the help of the independent shops and the independent shops need the help of the local people’, is the message broadcast in a new short film titled Local – The New Normal?, featuring nine local business owners.

What started out as a small idea to create a simple movie on an iPhone became a much larger project aimed at showcasing how small independent businesses in Clapham Junction have risen to the challenges presented during the coronavirus pandemic, reinventing and diversifying to support local residents as best they can. ‘We need the help of the independent shops and the independent shops need the help of the local people’.

But the attention has now shifted to the ‘new normal’, and with many businesses teetering on the brink of closure, Clapham Junction’s 420+ businesses are appealing for support from the local community.

‘The next few months will be critical for our businesses,’ says Executive Director of The Junction Business Improvement District (BID), Roz Lloyd-Williams. ‘Now, more than ever, we need to pull together.

‘The local economy and small independents underpin the infrastructure of the area – they give Clapham Junction its distinct identity and rich character. They support our local employment, community and our charitable institutions. We would sorely miss them if they were to disappear.’
